I was there for about 2 years working as an assistant manager at a Pizza Hut when my 2 best friends (who had just gotten laid off from their job) got me drunk and talked me into going to see the Air Force recruiter with them the next day. Next thing I know, I’m on my way to Lackland AFB for basic training. Although in retrospect I’d say that was the best thing that ever happened to me because I know that my life wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun or exciting had I stayed in Kansas. I have more fun than the law should allow. Lived in places I never would have been able to other wise and done a whole bunch of things I never would have had the chance to do. I got to live in Europe for 10 years in England and Holland and I have seen more countries than any one boy from Ozark Alabama should get to see. I love to travel and have enjoyed the chance the USAF gave me to do that. I’ve been to Guam and a little fly speck called Diego Garcia, which was actually a pretty cool place. I was stationed in Panama City, Fl for 4 years and that was a blast in itself. The only place I didn’t like was a hole called Victorville, Ca which, thank God, was only for 2 years. I did my last 4 years active at Barksdale AFB, La. I retired, got married, acquired a stepson and had a son all in the space of less than one year. Talk about a lifestyle change! I went to work as a Realtor in the Shreveport/Bossier City area and have been at that for 12 years now. It has it’s ups and downs but it’s better than working 8 to 5 somewhere. After I had been retired for 4 years, they started letting retirees back into the Reserves. I went in 2002 and have been doing the Weekend Warrior thing since then. I work in the 717 AMXS at Barksdale AFB as a supervisor for a bunch of guys loading bombs on A-10 aircraft. It’s a pretty good job and I work with a great bunch of guys. Sad to say that I have to leave in Nov 2010, though, because that will be my 33 years of service. Hard to believe it’s been that long. I’m divorced now but I have a great kid for a son and a great stepson who I still spend time with. John Wiley is 11 and stepson Jasper just turned 14. Lived in Auburn, Clemson S.C. (loved it there!), Marion Jct., AL and now Auburn, again (War Eagle!!).We love going to the N. Georgia Mountains any chance that we can to hike the area and Jim section hikes --we love being grandparents! My mom lived with us 18 years and passed 2005 and still miss her so much. I have finally over the years been able to live a childhood dream to play the harp and am doing so in our church orchestra, local ministries, weddings, banquets, and ensembles.I also enjoy knitting (when I get the chance to do so).
